WASTE PROCESSING

Cleaner, safer air for waste and recycling environments

Odour and air quality complaints from waste transfer, recycling and food waste facilities can affect operations, staff wellbeing and community relations. These odours and airborne contaminants are created by bacteria, moulds and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated from decomposing materials. Traditional fogging, misting or masking systems only hide the symptoms and can make the problem worse.

Continuous purification for demanding environments
AIRsteril technology provides a scientifically proven, energy-efficient solution for around-the-clock odour control. Each Mega Thermal or Ultimate unit uses advanced ultraviolet and catalytic processes to break down odour-causing compounds and constantly destroy microorganisms and other bioaerosols. This maintains cleaner air and helps prevent the spread of contaminants throughout enclosed or high-risk facilities.

Proven performance in demanding environments
AIRsteril systems are used across materials recovery facilities (MRFs), waste transfer stations, food waste processing and anaerobic digestion plants. Each unit operates through a process that draws contaminated air into a precision-engineered purification chamber, ensuring high dwell time and effective 24-hour performance with minimal maintenance and low energy use.

At a large, enclosed waste transfer station covering more than 10,000m² and processing around 1,000 tonnes of household waste per day, AIRsteril systems were introduced following persistent odour complaints from local residents. Within days of installation, external odour levels were no longer detectable, and genuine complaints stopped entirely.

Independent testing consistently demonstrates odour reductions of over 70 percent within waste containment environments, confirming significant and measurable improvement in air quality. Further site trials reviewed by microbiologist Dr David L. Webber recorded a 97 percent reduction in airborne microorganisms within sorting and baling areas over a three-month period.

Additional laboratory and field testing by HygCen Germany, ALS Global and the Eco-Institut has verified AIRsteril’s ability to reduce airborne bacteria, volatile organic compounds and odour-causing compounds, with all systems confirmed as safe for continuous use in occupied environments.

The system has helped us reduce the number of odour complaints and has paid for itself within six months. We are now looking at rolling out AIRsteril to the other facilities we operate.
